Quarterly Newsletter - August 2008 Your new committee...
Helen Robinson You'll notice the absence of yet another photograph. Why is it that so many people are camera shy? (sigh) Helen writes that her aim, in learning to play bridge some 10 years ago, was to exercise her mind, and she quickly became hooked. We can all relate to that! Her background is mostly in counselling and facilitating active and educative workshops. In the past year she has undertaken more training in neurolinguistic programming (NLP) These techniques are very effective in quickly transforming ineffective thoughts and behaviours into adaptable, successful ones. She also skis. I know.... she escaped me and my camera by fleeing to Rainbow. (So she's also strong: that T Bar's a killer!) A big thank you to Kath Saunders and her team for her excellent catering of our tournaments. Congratulations to... Linda Dow and Jo Price who won the Nelson Intermediate Pairs and to Gillian Finnegan and Martin Lindley who topped the Spades Section.
Our thanks to Adrian Abraham, who gave up his time to score for us and to Sheila Beggs, who directed with her usual ability.
Honourable mention goes to Jan Head and Maggie Morris who got 58.19% in the afternoon session. Bridge Lessons Adrian Abraham will run a set of 6 BEGINNERS' lessons, starting on 6th September. Please inform your friends, and ask them to call Sally Astridge 545 2244 or Kath Saunders 548 5868 ASAP.
We're happy to arrange INTERMEDIATE LESSONS, should there be enough people interested. Call Sally, on the above number.
Of the 30 people who signed up earlier in the year, 6 have already joined the club, and several more have shown an interest. We extend a warm welcome to you all.
Match Committee
The Match Committee for the 2008-9 year is Adrian Abraham (Chair) Sheila Beggs, Helen Robinson & Jo Price. Please... When you pop suggestions into the suggestion box (and we welcome them) please remember to sign them! Dealing & Scoring Dealing out the cards each week is a big job, and for some time the load has been resting on the shoulders of Lesley Wilson and Bill Rush. Lesley, at least, has indicated that she'd like a break. We're in need of volunteers who can learn to do this work on a rostered basis. Please??? Similarly, we'd really like more people to learn to enter the scores. It need not be late into the night - the following morning is more than acceptable. Jo Price does a great job keeping the web pages up to date, but if we can share the load, it makes life that much easier for everyone.
Calling all players... Why not join us for the HANDICAPPED Thursday game? It's a great way to gain experience. If you'd like to play, but need a partner, call Molly Buckle: 545 0485 And a small bird tells me that Kath Saunders is in charge of this year's Christmas Party.... Mark your calendars - it's going to be a riot!!! Wannabe A Director? We are looking for more qualified directors. Are you interested in joining a small group to study toward the next Director exams in November? Helen Robinson is offering to coordinate such a study group, and to provide resources and techniques for completing the exam successfully. This will be fun! And testing! Give it a go - be up to date with the latest changes to the rules.
Please let either Judy Rickard-Hall 546 8589 or Sally Astridge 545 2244 know.
Having paid directors for the Monday & Tuesday games has been a big success. We wish to continue this practice. Ann Urquhart Memorial Trophy Sunday 19th October For those new to our club - Ann was our Treasurer and died in very unfortunate circumstances. Please note the revised date. Starting at 12.30pm Cost $10.00 All news taken from the newsletter, produced by Sally Astridge.
